art is always interpreted. and people interpret things in all sorts of ways, sometimes even making it out to be something completely irrelevant to the creator’s intentions for their creation. and to its recipients, their own interpretation, their own opinion, may be more important to them than the original blueprint. yet, no matter how strongly people may try to project their own perspective onto it, the truth and identity behind the creative work is found in the life breathed into it by the creator.

you can’t just eat a piece of steak and say, “this tastes like fish to me, so it’s fish.” a steak is a steak, even if you can’t taste it. nor can you override an author’s thoughts behind his literature with your own exposition. and in some strange way, the parallel idea is that the truth of our purpose as creations is rooted in what God created us to be, not what we find satisfaction in. the truth of the Word is not found in our convicted interpretations, it’s in the heart of God. our calling is not toward where we want to go and where our own skills and interests can thrive, its literally where God calls out to us from. and many times, he is calling from the wilderness.

we are stories and songs crafted by God, and our identity does not lie within the eyes of this world. He wrote us to be radical, counter-cultural. He made us for the narrow path that leads to a world beyond the one we know. we must be willing to lose this life to reach our home.
